Who is Alfadil? Twenty thousand people live in the refugee camp of Farchana in eastern Chad, which was founded in 2004 after the genocide began in Darfur.  How do the Sudanese, who are forced to spend years exiled from their homeland, survive and even thrive? What does it mean to live in limbo, not knowing if their future will ever change? This unit focuses on daily life in Farchana and on Alfadil, a likable and hard-working man who exemplifies traditional Sudanese beliefs and values, but one who would also sacrifice it all to come to the USA.  Through the footage, students will see how camp life has given Alfadil opportunities for leadership and safety, but how it has also eroded some of his values over time

Teaching Unit Overview: What happens to people when disaster strikes their homeland? Where do they go? What is their life like when they get to a new environment? How do they adapt to the new place, and how can it change their values and perspectives over time? Students will learn how survivors of mass destruction in Darfur find safety and a new way of life in a refugee camp in Chad. They will then utilize a variety of technologies to create media products to inform, entertain, or heighten global awareness of the Sudanese and their plight.
